Can you hoover those shaggy rugs...??

As per the title really, I need a new rug - just a cheap one as the kids and dogs will only ruin it this time of year - but a lot of them are those shaggy things. How do I keep it clean, will a hoover ruin it?
Thanks.
Thanks.

I've got THIS shaggy rug & I hoover it no problems. It doesn't pick up all of the crud, (I take it outside & give it a beat down once in a while) but it still looks as good now as when I bought it in January."Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and it may be necessary from time to time to give a stupid or misinformed beholder a black eye."...Miss piggy0

I have a shaggy rug from Ikea, I hoover it and it cleans up fine.
Need to hoover in a specific direction though so it looks good, hoover this way and it looks nice, hoover that way and it looks really grubby
Can't think of anything smart to put here...0 -
I love hoovering mine...It looks like blow-drying a muppet...0

It depends how shaggy. DD has one that looks and is the same length as grass in her room and I can't hoover anything up. It gets shaken outside and we have a cascade of glitter and sequins and bits on the floor - nightmare.0

Brilliant, thank you. Argos have a few on offer, now to decide... grey or Sparkly Purple

My mother-in-law vacuums hers then goes over it with a plastic garden rake to make sure all of the 'strands' go the same way. I kid you not. Ours gets takn outside and beaten a few times, mainly because we have wooden floors downstairs and I can't be bothered to bring the vacuum clearner down!
And to be slightly pedantic - whether or not you can hoover them depends on if you have a hoover or if you have a dyson or other brand

The only issue I've found with ours is that the edges aren't neatly bound like on some rugs meaning you get the odd loose thread which gets caught in the hoover if you're paying no attention like I usually am hoovering.Little miracle born April 2012, 33 weeks gestation and a little toughie!0

I have had this same rug for 3 years now and I hoover it no problem. We have dogs who love lying on it but it still looks good.Life is not the way it’s supposed to be. It’s the way it is. The way you cope with it is what makes the difference.0
