when I asked for an explaination, they wouldn't give a reason, very strange.
The account must be at least 20 years old.
Anyone else come across this?

Was the account dormant, e.g no activity for over a year?
If this is not the case, they may have identified some recent activity as 'suspicious',.i.e possibly fraudulent or money-laundering related:

There was an article on Moneybox some months ago about this.
A man got a (legitimate) call from another branch of his bank saying they'd made a mistake and paid some cheques into his account number by mistake, but not to worry; they'd put a reversing transaction through.
Next thing he knew his bank put a fraud marker on CIFAS and closed his account and refused point blank to re-open it or discuss the matter, saying they had thoroughly investigated the matter. Several other banks then also closed his accounts because of the fraud marker.
He eventually rang the branch who called him, by finding their number in his call register, and spoke to the person who had originally called him. They spoke to the bank's fraud department and his account was eventually re-opened and he received £1k compensation and a big apology.
So unfortunately, mistakes get made and sometimes investigations are simply not carried out properly. I suggest you complain and push and push again and go to the FOS if you don't get any joy.We need the earth for food, water, and shelter.

1: Was it funded on a daily basis ? or fund it every 2 or 3 months?
2: What type of account? visa debit?
3: Any standing orders or direct debits?
(maybe they wouldn't closed the account if you had a credit card with them ?)
Very strange but be honest 'you must of done something' which has set there alarm bells and of course they wouldn't give you the reason (they never will)• HSBC (Main A/C)

So from the fact you did not answer the other questions posed by "Lith". That the account has been sat doing nothing for years...
As such they will just close it.Never ASSUME anything its makes a>>> A55 of U & ME <<<0 -
TBH "on a daily basis or every 2-3 months" was a silly question (to put it mildly) that doesn't deserve to be answered.
And as the post #3 demonstrates, "must have" (not "must of" BTW) was certainly far too sweeping statement.0 -

His choice tho lul,TBH "on a daily basis or every 2-3 months" was a silly question (to put it mildly) that doesn't deserve to be answered.

Silly? not really i know for a fact HSBC are fussy i got a letter about not funding my account for 4 months straight 0.o if you're with HSBC you would damn well know what there like..... fussy b@stards in my eyes, but long as they see
'any sort of money' going in every month or every 2 months they seem to shut up.
Nothing wrong with #3 but you seem to be all spelling/grammar nazi on me wow don't be 'hurt now' :rotfl: relax don't sweat over it.
Maybe they closed his account because he didn't FUND IT AT ALL FOR YEARS which is normal, but now he wants to know why it's closed? if he gives us more 'insight' on what he's done or been doing to the account we could dig a little deeper ? right? his choice tho his choice....• HSBC (Main A/C)

Silly because funding on a daily basis is something unrealistic. Weakly or monthly are most common, but "or" in your question left no other options between 'daily' and 'every 2-3 months'.
