Hi Everyone,
I want to change the default CD burner on a Windows XP laptop from the inbuilt XP burning software to a third party program. I have downloaded CDBurnerXP Pro and installed it. It works fine but I need it to be accessed from the right click mouse function and I can't see a way of doing it....i.e I want to be able to highlight a file to be burnt to CD and then right click and then select to 'send to' and this will send the file to and open up the CD burning program.
Is there a way of disabling the inbuilt XP CD burner and letting another program take its place?
Thanks
SB

Usually if software has this function, it will add it's own settings to the context menu (the right click menu you're talking about).Throwing acid is bad.... in some peoples eyes...0

I've never seen that done anyway. The only way that you can burn from a context menu is by using Nero InCD or Roxio Direct CD.
Other than that you can simply select the CD drive that you wish to use from within the program.0 -
As JonnyThunder has hinted at, it is up to the software author to install the correct registry entries to allow the context menu that you are after. It seems that the authors of CDBurnerXP Pro chose not to do so.
You therefore have four choices -
1. manually create the correct registry entries yourself (time-consuming, with a high chance of errors)
2. install a free windows shell extension utility such as http://www.contextmagic.com/menu-extension/ which will let you setup any file type to open with any compatible software (my preferred choice)
3. download and install a different free DVD burning program that does install the context menu options you want (there are hundreds of free DVD burning programs)
4. create an association for the file types that you want to open with CDBurnerXP Pro by opening Explorer, choosing Tools > Folder options > File Types, scrolling down the list to the file type that you want (e.g. .avi), choose Advanced > Edit > Browse and select CDBurnerXP Pro. When you right-click on an avi file from now on and choose open, or double-click it, it will now open with CDBurnerXP Pro. Only trouble is, it will probably try to play it, rather than open it in a recording window, which is what I presume you would want.
As I said, try one of the many programs of the type listed in option 2.0 -
Thanks everybody for your replies!
Thanks JZpop for all the detail in your answer - much appreciated. I will have a look at what you suggest.0 -
It won't work.
The only options are the one's I've mentioned. Unless someone else knows differently.0 -
Thanks Donnie,
I will try those two as well.0 -
You should only use one of them at a time. Basically, they allow you to use any re-writeable disc as a mini hard drive.
You can simply drag and drop items to the drive letter or right click and 'send to'.
Nero InCD 5.5.1.23 is included with Nero 7; http://www.nero.com/enu/Downloads.html
though it isn't installed if you choose 'Typical install'. You'd need to choose 'Custom Install' and then select it to be installed when given the choice.0 -

If you want reliability, just use Nero Express for your burning needs.0

Thanks for all the info. I will install the one you recommend.0
