How much food?

W recently rescused a dog from spain. A podenco cross with a greyhound.

He has been amazing so far no problems at all.

The only thing is that we are unsure of how much food he needs. We have been feeding him half a can in the morning with the same in the evening and dog treats/bones inbetween.

He is quite a fussy eater (compared to my last dog a collie who used to eat anything) but sometimes he sits by us and just stares then runs waits near the door near his bowl.

As I am feeling sorry for him I always give in and give him a little more food. I dont want to overfeed him but I dont want him to be hungry though:o How much should we be feeding him? Thanks

It will vary hugely. His weight will give a rough guide, most foods will have a suggested feeding guideline by size. Then just watch his waist - it starts expanding, and cut down, it shrinks, increase portions.
I would go for a good quality food that will provide optimum nutrition if he's fussy - some foods are so bulked out with fillers that a dog needs to eat twice as much which isn't great with picky eaters. A fish flavoured food may tempt him as they tend to have a stronger smell - something like Fish4Dogs perhaps (looks pricey, but you feed less of it). If you want to feed a wet food, I'd go for a good brand like Naturediet, Natures Menu, or perhaps PAH's own version Wainwrights (the trays, not the tins)

Greyhounds are large breeds and 1 tin a day sounds like quite a low amount regardless of brand.

My pure greyhound is tall and but when looking best and fit weighs between 38 and 42 kilos.

I would expect your sight/sight cross to be lighter, and smaller but not horrifically so.

Greys, indeed many sighthounds can be fussy eaters, and often refuse food. Sitting by a bowl with a fussy dog of sight hound origin would suggest to me he is hungry.

If you mean 1 standard sized can mine would eat that as a light snack. ;). Though she is a 'poor doer'. I would base feed requirements on that of a grey hound, and reduce if it's too much for the podenco half of him. Mine eats a lot more than is recommend for the weight of a greyhound, but is also heavier, though condition scores perfectly at her heaviest weight.
Fwiw, my sights hounds have never refused raw, and I think they do much better on it, we are not feeding raw ATM for various reasons, none of them related to the benefit of this for these dogs in my previous experience.
