MBNA Charged Me For Playing Bingo

Have just reviewed my MBNA card statement which came yesterday and noticed alarmingly that they have charged me a 30% fee for using the card to open an online account with a bingo web site. Says that it is a "cash advance fee". I have never experienced this with other credit cards. Has anybody else? Should I kick up a fuss?

This is becoming the norm with CC, anything like gambling or betting or finance payments are now being classed as cash advance and will attract the (usually) daily interest and in some cases, the cash advance fee.

    Are you sure it's 30%? Perhaps 3%?

Same happened to me when i signed up to totesport and deposited £10 with my MBNA card, i rang them about it and they said yeh gambling is classed as cash advance, charged me £3 for £10. I've read on here somewhere it is possible to claim it back and some have been successful but for £3 i couldn't be bothered with the fuss and will just use a debit card in future.

Ah. It will be X% or minimum £3 in that case. Cash adv fee is usually around 2.5 to 3% but with a minimum threshold.

I suspect this info will be in the Terms and Conditions of the card.

It was in one of the claiming back bank threads I saw it in, wish I could be more helpful than that. If you search the forums for "Cash advance fee" a few of the very long threads from the claiming bank charges come up so I guess it will ahve been discussed in one of those threads somewhere.

You can ask them if they will refund it as a goodwill, but you wont be able to reclaim this in the same manner as late fee's and the like - it's a completely different thing.
