I find it a constant struggle to lose weight and keep to a budget. But, I'm also convinced it can be done.

Personally I find I'm attracted to lots of mediterranean ingredients when I'm trying to lose weight because they're big on flavour and are real food. I hate slimming clubs that promote their own convenience/ junk food. I find they're very much geared towards supermarket shopping too.

I tend to want to rush out and restock my cupboards with jars of roasted peppers and sun-dried tomatoes when I've plenty of food already in them.

I find The Diet Bible by Judith Wills full of common sense.
She includes a list of low cal and low cost foods. She includes things like; pasta, rice, wholemeal bread, potatoes, medium fat cheese like Brie, Edam, mozzarella, lean ham, tinned tuna, eggs, baked beans and other pulses, chicken, natural yogurt, tinned fruit injuice, tinned tomatoes, cheap veg and fruit in season, frozen veg and flavourings like soy sauce and mustard.

wow there are some really great ideas here, thanks so much everyone i really appreciate it!!

Im going to try and make soup at the weekend, i really thought i would have to add some kind of sweetner, hense my comment about it not been sin free. Im not much of a cook but i will give it a go. A stupid question, is stock just a veggie stock cube?

I love spicy food so the raosted pepper idea is wonderful.

Thanks again everyone, Im going to work out some menus so that i can batch cook, keep to budget, OS and loose weight - phew theres a challenge!

Use whatever stock you have - a cube, bouillon powder or hm chicken stock. Marigold Bouillon powder is a good brand.

If you roast a tray of tomatoes their sweetness will intensify. You can then sieve the tomatoes and the resulting puree is very sweet. Add stock and hey presto- soup.

Try either chicken bovril or Vecon (both out of a jar) for a sin free stock.

Look at these unofficial sw sites for recipe ideas:

As others have said SW is very os as recipes are from scratch and can be made up as you go along.

Well ive just worked out some menus for the next few weeks, ordered my food from tesco which has come in at £84. This should last myself and hubs four weeks, we will just need to buy fresh things which will be approx £5-£10 per week. Not too bad concidering im sticking to red days and ive included cat food and household cleaning things. I should be able to bring this cost down by shopping around a bit more but i just wanted to get started asap, i will do some research into bargains from diff stores in time for my next bid shop.

I have my next few nights planned batch cooking :)

    Many thanks everyone
