About every 30 minutes a message pops up on my screen saying:
"HP Deskjet 5900 Series-status
Printer Maintenance Tip
Because the printer ejects ink onto the paper in a fine mist, ink smudges will eventually appear on the printer and adjacent surfaces. To remove smudges, stains, and/or dried ink, use a soft cloth moistened with water."
I have cleaned the printer but still get this message which slows down the computer and stops everything. How can I stop this appearing?

Turn off printer tips.
I dont have the printer model you are refferring to but as an educated guess i would assume that the message is derived from some software that came with your printer and is installed on your PC
If so, find out how to turn of tips through an options or preferences menu within any software that is associated with the printer.
Failing that, i would right click your printer settings (by right clicking and hitting properties) In here you can seek anything that may be an option to turn of alerts/hints/tips etc.
Failing that i would uninstall your printer and every software that came with it and reinstall it via the DRIVERS ONLY option.

Yeah, I totally agree with that. HP have bloatware for drivers and usually their control panels are more a hinderance than a help.
If you can get a driver only, i'd go with that. Alternatively, you could have a printer fault of some kind (sensor maybe). If it's anything like my car, the sensors that are designed to notify you of impending failure break down more than the mechanics they are trying to protect!Throwing acid is bad.... in some peoples eyes...0
