I forgot to renew my insurance with LV. Now the renewal has lapsed and they want to charge me £160 more for 'new policy'. Rachel team 11 says 'we ask more Qs' now. They asked 1 more Q than they did before: 'how many bedrooms.' How can they justify this sort of jump?

Is this one question what would cost me £160 more if I was :(to stay with them?

Just shop round for the best deal.

But beware most companies ask that you have had continuous cover to allow any discount for your no claims history.

You now have nil years continuous cover.

There are lots of companies that will allow you to keep your no claims discount.

Some require the period without insurance to be less than 12 months.

Others just want to know that you have previously held insurance.

Providing that there have been no incidents that could have given rise to a claim while you have been uninsured you should be able to get the previous NCD back.

I find it odd that LV would be charging you £160 more as you are in effect a new customer with a new policy and this is generally cheaper than renewing with an existing provider. Maybe they have just got more expensive for your postcode / personal details.

Have a shop around on the comparison sites - you can check prices with and without NCD. You should then ring the insurer for any that are competitive to clarify if you still qualify for NCD.

If bedroom count was not asked previously then it would indicate a different type of policy. In which case it is easily justified as you are not comparing like for like. If it was not asked before then you would not be on a bedroom rated policy. If it is asked now then you would likely be on a bedroom rated policy.

I've never been asked that - only claim history. A previous/existing policy never came into it, I even with my switch to Direct Line 3 months ago.
