What a load of rubbish !!!
Once you have rust the only way to stop it spreading is to cut it out and weld new metal in.
As the OP has stated it has already gone thru one layer of metal...and you think a bit of paint is going to stop it,:rotfl:
erm.. I read it as being a tongue in cheek comment!
If I were driving a car with that much chassis rusted I would go over speed bumps.. carefully! :eek:0 -

You need to find a garage whom you trust, so not having to ask elsewhere if they are telling the truth.
best to replace the whole arm and i would get the hole sorted.Google gives you answers use it.........0 -
Hi all.
Over £170 for a new arm. Lower ball joints cannot be sourced.
Will await the outcome of the next MOT, like you said. Its character.
The corrosion - Will probably be picked up on the next MOT.0 -
what car is it?0

The ball joint does not look replaceable so yes, it will need to be a whole arm. Does £170 include fitting? That is a lot of money for just an arm.
Get a wire brush and clean up that patch of rust. Only when you know the full scale of the damage will you know the best way to repair it. A wire brush but for a drill is best as you will get it back to bare metal in minutes.
If it is holed then it will need welded, if not then some etch primer then a coat of hammerite and finally underseal would sort it out.
If it is not holed but has slight pitting then, if it where me, i would build the metal thickness backup using some quicksteel. [STRIKE]Given the location you would not adversly affect the safety of the shell.[/STRIKE]
Just looked at the pics again. Thought the rust was on the exhaust tunnel but i see that is on the sill. Important to make a strong repair here so get rid of all the rust and then weld a plate back in. It will need joining to the floorpan so some of the floor might need cutting out too. (interior out job unfortunately).
I'm not a mechanic but own and maintain Alfa's so suspension and rust issues are common to me.0 -
The £170 was supplied from the Main Dealer (new). Europarts/GSF do not sell it. No point going 2nd hand if the ball joints cant be replaced.
Ball Joint & Corrosion - Looks like it might be a 1-way journey to the scrap yard when the MOT expires.0 -
Is it for an Omega?? Full arms are available on ebay - they may well be of crap quality but are only £50ish for a pair, the labour should be minimal (or do it yourself).
Get that rust sorted unless you plan to scrap the thing very soon0
