Fairly easy. But time consuming.
You need a sound card with mic / input socket. Then get a standard lead going out from the hifi to the sound card. Then you simply capture the sound as it is played with whatever software you have. I have Nero wave editor which I think is available as a free download from the Nero website. The trick though is to get the volume just right on the hi fi. Too low and it's drowned in hiss, too high and it distorts. It takes a bit of trial and error to get it.
Once you do this you are left with a huge wav file that you need to break down in to tracks (perhaps after some doctoring to remove hiss etc). The best software I have found for this (by a country mile) is CD Wave editor by Milo Software, available as shareware.0 -
My PC came with sound card and line-in socket for connection from headphone socket on stereo. I used to use Musicmatch but now I am on XP, Musicmatch want money for the upgrade which allows recording from a line-in source. I have since found free trial software at Polderbits.com. It is free for two weeks and it makes the recording bit really easy. Good luck.0
