Broken Wrist - What to do?

I broke my wrist last week (right hand) after slipping on ice on the way to work. I still went into work but the pain became so bad I had to go to A&E who did x-rays and it was shown to be broken so I am now in a cast.
I had one day off work and went back in. However my job involves a lot of typing and I just can't do it. I have been trying to just use my left hand for the mouse and typing but this just makes my left hand cramp up and typing with one hand isn't particularly fast.
Anyway when I got home yesterday I was in agony as I am just having to let my right hand rest on the desk and my left do all all the work.
I am honestly considering saying I can't work and asking for sick leave for a few days or something - I was told the pain of the break should subside within a week or two so maybe I can do more with my fingers after that (fingers are fine, it's the wrist that is broken but at the moment any hand movement hurts). I just don't know.
I feel like its only my wrist but when my job is mainly typing it is just making things impossible. I have asked about other things to do but there just isn't anything else.
What do you think I should do?

Speak to your boss about other duties whilst you have a broken wrist? Surely they sat you down before you started back at work and discussed it?If you haven't got it - please don't flaunt it. TIA.0

if there is nothong else that your employer can find for you to do then you will have to go on the sick,
your employer has to show a duty of care and as such cannot complain/discipline if you are of sickIMOJACAR

As a sufferer previously of a broken wrist (in cast) I would suggest that you stay off work at least until the cast is off, there is no point in suffering unduly.
Your doctor will write a sick note or a back to work note or whatever it is called these days.0 -
Phone your manager to advise them that you can't carry out your normal duties. Let them know if there are any of your normal tasks that you could do and ask whether there is anything else you could do that is not normally your work (perhaps being the receptionist).
If you aren't able to work sensibly, say you will have to take sick leave and complete a self-certification form (for up to 7 calendar days).0 -
Basically I was told "not to over do it" and left to it. I asked about other duties but there isn't much you can do with one hand there.. Most jobs involve either typing or lifting boxes0

sorry but it does, the employer cannot insist that the op works 'as normal' when there is significant risk of causing more damage to the injury,so therefor cannot discipline if they provide a 'sick note'IMOJACAR

Just to add, my employer actually insisted that I stayed off work while the cast was on as they would have been held liable for any damage done by me working 'one-handed'
I was going to stay off anyway
cheers Derek exactly what I was saying
