GNER refund
Options
Don't know if I'm the correct forum but please move me if not.
I returned yesterday from London to Durham with GNER rail. I travelled down early that morning to pick up my 6 year old son. However his mother only just told me when I arrived that he was ill (hmmm). So I had to return to Durham on my own. However while on the train the inspector told me I had to buy a completely new ticket as my son was not with me and I was using a family railcard! The new ticket cost £92!!! This really added insult to injury.
Can anyone tell me if I can claim any money back. It wasn't my fault my son was ill and I thought the inspector was a bit heartless. I've e-mailed gner but they haven't replied yet.
Any advice would be appreciated thanks.

Looking on the website it says:
To use your Family Railcard, your group must contain at least one named cardholder and at least one child between 5-15 years.
and;
To enable discounted tickets to be used, the minimum group is one child and one Railcard holder.
Therefore, I don't think GNER will do anything about it as they're not at fault in any way.
I wouldn't be too annoyed with the inspector... afterall he's just doing his job and he's probably heard that 'excuse' so many times before so he just ignores it... ok, in your case it wasn't an excuse but he's got no way of knowing that.
Did you check with your son's mother before you left that everything was ok? If you did and she said everything was fine then you could always ask her to refund you if you have no luck with GNER.0 -
