Paternity Leave and Pay

Hi Just wondering if anyone knows if my Hubby will be entitled to any Paternity leave/pay.
Hubby is self employed in the sub contracting industry, so usually any time he has off he doesnt get paid for.
He pays NI and tax, so would the gov be obliged to pay him any paternity pay when babe is born in August? Any ideas?
Thanks in advance

That's an interesting one ...
I know when I was self employed I could claim Maternity Allowance which is less generous that SMP, but better than nothing. I know you had to have paid the right number of NI conts in particular years, but it was worth me paying voluntary conts even though I didn't normally earn enough to pay NI. And I think you still can, trying to remember from more recent threads whether you can or not.
The best people to ask might be Working Families or ACAS - have had a quick look on the Working Families site but it's not covered in their Fact Sheet.
I wouldn't hold your breath though ... I haven't heard of Paternity Allowance anywhere.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -

AFAIK Paternity pay now is subject to the same rules/regulations as maternity pay - I know this because I researched it thoroughly when pg with DD2! I'm not sure with your DH being self-employed if he can claim it though - check out http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Employment/Employees/WorkAndFamilies/DG_10029398 for further details.Dealing with my debts!Currently overpaying Virgin cc -balance Jan 2010 @ 1985.65Now @ 703.63

My husband is self employed, as a sign fitter.
When he needs to take time off he does not get paid.
I am due to drop in 3 weeks and he is not entitiled to paternity pay/leave from the government.
He has been working overtime to get some extra money in, so he can afford to have a few days off with the baby and me.
Even if he had been employed he would only be entitiled to about £ 112 per week, for 2 weeks.Slimming world new starter 2/1/17:D:DWeight loss so far 5 stone 8 lbs

My hubby is employed, but in order to continue paying for morgage etc he can't afford to take paternity leave. He'll be taking a paid holiday instead. Don't make it easy on them do they?
Best thing to do is to give birth on a bank holiday friday evening or during christmas...:wall:0
