Car salesmen advice

Hello,
I'm looking for advice on haggling/negotiating with second-hand car salesmen please. I've got 10K in cash I want to spend on a second-hand car. What would be a realistic amount I could aim to haggle over if for example the forecourt price is 10K - 9K, 9.5K ? Any advice on how to beat them down would be most welcome - this is my first foray into car buying
Thanks in advance

The discount depends on how much profit they have got mark up on the price of the car.
Decide on 2 or 3 types of car you would like, do this by reading reports on which are the best used cars to own, What car, Which car, there are plenty to go at. When you have done this buy a copy of Auto Trader and see how much your choice of car is going for. You will now know how much to expect to pay for the dream on your drive. When looking for your car take someone with you who knows about them or the salesman will sell you some rubbish, they have no mercy. If possible buy a car which is still in it's manufactures warranty with a dealer service history. Don't buy on inpulse. The list of advice is endless - good luck.0 -
It 's impossible to say how much discount you can expect, the main thing to bear in mind is how attractive the initial price is.It's no good having £500 knocked off a car that is £500 too expensive to start with.
Car salesmen like nothing better than a punter who does not know what car they are looking for,do as much research as you can ,decide on the type of car you want and know how much they are,do not buy on impulse, the world is full of people who did and later regretted their decision!!compare as many garages as you can,as well as price guides, which are often just that a guide and can vary by large ammounts, compared to real values in your area.
As you have no p/ex you are in a strong position and could buy a private sale, try looking for one with full service history and still under warranty and you could save some serious money, make sure there is no outstanding finance on it though. There are two sides to every story.

we took my sil to buy our car and she managed to save us £600 on r reg vaxhall astra desiel
it was up for £2000 and we got 1 years mot, £20 desiel, towbar electrics renewed, and £600 off
i would never of thought that we could have got that much off(£200 would have been my offer) so it is worth taking someone with you who will beat the salesman down
good luck on finding what you want at the price you wanti have an intermittant connection so sorry if i dont reply straight away

It depends largely where you go, I think.
If you go to a major dealer, they're supposed to have around 15% to play with.
I got mine: said 10 on it, was reduced to 9 in a "sale" and I knocked them down another grand so got it for 8.
If you go to smaller garages, they'll probably work on less of a margin.
As others have said, though: do your research.
Have a look on Parkers and it will tell you exactly how much you should look to pay for your car...might not always be spot-on, but is certainly a guide.0
