Will 3DS games work on older DS machines?

I know little about games as my questions shows 
My nephew has been given a DS but hasn't got any games for it so my his dad (my bro) has asked for some for him for Xmas.
Suggested going to Game to get pre-owned games as they are cheaper but most of them seem to be 3DS - I don't know if this just means 3D and they will work on any console or they will only work on newer models???

You should never call somebody else a nerd or geek because everybody (even YOU !!!) is an
"anorak" about something whether it's trains, computers, football, shoes or celebs
