Unable to boot Windows 7 into safe mode

I have a very strange problem with a Samsung N210 netbook. It refuses to boot into safe mode.

I know fine well how to boot into Safe Mode - either via MS Config or pressing F8 at bootup. I refuse to try the MS Config method right now, in fear I lock the computer into loop of trying to boot into safe mode.

What happens is this. I press F8 at startup to bring up the menu, then choose safe mode. The black screen with white text loads, then I get the normal logon screen. I enter the password, and the machine seems to try to login then just restarts. If I sit at logon screen nothing, the machine will restart in a few seconds - so this tells me something after 3-4 seconds is prompting the machine to restart. This is why I won't try MS Config, in case I'm not able to get the machine to boot back into normal mode.

I unchecked all the startup items in MS Config, with the same result. Reading, disabling Fax and Printer Spooler services helped somebody - but not me! Checked Event Viewer, and got some Event ID 1704s from both winlogon and explorer making Windows shutdown. From this, I used sfc /scannow to check for corrupt system files and chkdsk to check the drive for errors - chkdsk fixed some errors, sfc found none. Alas, I still couldn't get into safe mode.

Failing reinstalling, I don't know what else to try. Help please!

I've run numerous sweeps for Malware, including for MS Blaster and Sasser viruses. Nothing was brought up.

The machine does bootup in Windows 7 as normal, just not safe mode.

I don't see why the machine wouldn't bootup from another OS on CD or USB stick, but the operation that I need to perform requires Windows to be loaded into safe mode.
  • Have you looked in Event viewer see if there any events like blue screen recovery related to your attempts to boot in safe mode ? (No I don't work for sub continent windows telling me you have a problem scammers :p)

  • Another option to try is to create a new account with admin rights and then try logging on with that one in safe mode
