Start up applications

I've got a few problems with applications starting up automatically and slowing my PC down. When I look inthe bottom right stuff like quicktime's opening automatically when I don't need it to. It's probably a silly question but how do I change the settings so that only important stuff automatically opens?

I'm not very technical so please speak in IT idiot language! :)

    start, run, msconfig

startup tab, untick quicktime, but it will come back when you visit a site which reinstalls it.

Thanks Ianna for asking the question and big thanks albertross for the answer. Have often wondered how to do that. Have had a go and hopefully all will be better. What a great community this is.xx:T

    Try this

    http://www.windowsstartup.com/

It tells you what these programmes are and whether it is safer to untick it- 'in Layman's language'

You guys are great, thankyou so much!
  • if you're slightly more techie, you can download these two programs....

EndItAll (which allows you to kill unknown non-windows processes)

    and

HiJackThis (which allows you to clean windows of potential malware)

PLEASE be careful using both of these tools if you're unsure about what you're doing, especially HiJackThis! It's an amazing tool to help remove spyware, but powerful.

Also, you can scan your process list and check the process names against the list at LiUtilities.com to see if there are any rogue programs taking up your processor time!
