keep looking at the 'black spots' and hopefully any day soon you will see them wiggling about. my tadpoles get bigger everyday. My cats and dog for some unknown reason ignore their dish of clean water and drink out of the pond... I bet they have got loads of frogs growing inside them!!:rotfl:0

Arent frogs great, I have had loads of frogspawn in my pond. This weekend pulling up the decking, cos it was rotten, there must have been bout 30 frogs/toads under it. I then felt guilty so have replaced some of it so they still have a home. I have a cat and dog too, have to watch them though when the babies start commuting.Who would like my last penny?0

Okay, here is the latest on the frogspawn situation! The weather has been very grey and overcast since lunchtime today, and yesterday evening was cold and a bit rainy as well. I am convinved that the little black dots are bigger than they were on Friday, when we first discovered them, so, now I know that their rate of development is linked to the temperature, I have decided to give them a couple of hours indoors, in an unheated room, so I can hopefully give them a bit of a start! It also means that I can have a better look at them, so, ... I have been shining a torch on them, while looking down through a magnifiying glass at the same time. Hubby is certain that I have lost the plot completely... I SO want to prove him wrong!
Anyway, off to watch The Street now, so I will let you know if there are any developments. Thanks to all for your advice, gosh you are a clever lot, aren't you?:A:hello:  please play nicely children !0 -
babyblooz, how are your frogies doing?:rolleyes:0

Some of our tadpoles have turned into frogs and will be released later today. The first one to turn into a frog got eaten by the tadpoles so we now have two bowls and once they grow arms we move them to the other bowl to stop the mob from getting them!-The birds of sadness may fly overhead but don't let them nest in your hair0

Things I learned about frogs and their spawn !
Frogs like to gangbang!
Taddies get sucked into the pond pump and minced !
The mince eventually blocks the pump!
Unblocking pumps bunged up with taddie mince is a man's job!
Baby and teenage frogs are daft enough to jump up your skirt, if you're wearing one ! (kilts for blokes, I suppose).
If you sit quietly by the pond and croak to them they will croak back!
This could be the most interesting conversation you'll have all day!
Toads are far more intelligent and walk in a sensible manner......................I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

i dont mean to spoil your fun. but are you aware that transfering spawn/frogs from ponds can be illegal in some counties due to the risk of transfering diseases. be carefull not to get caught thats all.
why dont you just get a small pond in your garden. you can even get frog ponds from local garden centres.
i am only aware of this due to the fact that i aquired a pond which came complete with frogs one of them platic type ponds.and someone mentioned to me about moving frogs around and the transfer of disease think its called red leg and has killed loads of frogs recently and that i could be prosecuted. i explained that the frogs moved with the pond and they seemed happy with that. and that i hadnt gone and got the frogs from a local pond.
mind you though recently i did aquire some very nice lily pads only small ones which have come up again this year from pond where we walk our dogs.0 -

Ok I did not know any of this being unaware of a frog law. Thought it would be ok as they are going back to where they came from. We are even getting fresh pond water from the same pond twice a week for them. How would they get a disease. We don't want a pond in case one of the children has an accident and with 2 very young cats who will catch anything that moves the frogs would all turn into dinner. What do you recommend we do with the remaining tadpoles/frogs as I don't want to do something illegal but would not like to kill them all either. Thanks DustyThe birds of sadness may fly overhead but don't let them nest in your hair0 -
Update on the froggie situation ... not a lot has happened ... at all
... the spawn looks very much like it did before, except slightly bigger black dots in the middle, and I think one or two are looking elongated ... but its difficult to look at because it is so slippy, I try to pick it up but it slides off everything, and because the water is rainwater, its not exactly easy to see ... but how would I know if it was dead ... would it just shrivel up and get less, or what? I am desperate for there to be a happy ending! I didn't want to post again, until I had some definite news ... you know, no news is good news kind of thing ... so send a thought out for my would-be-froggies in waiting ...:lovethoug

If the frogspawn looks like this (elongated):
Then its alive, otherwise if it still looks like this:
Then its dead unfortunately.
Our pond had about 3 or 4 lots of frogspawn in Febuary and actually iced over (North Northumberland), but we've got loads of tadpoles right now in the pond as well as a lot of frogs, well over 30.YouGov£50.....2/09/09
