Problem playing various media on PC

Options
I have an Acer laptop with Acer Arcade which plays DVD movies, sound and video files etc. It is an Acer Aspire 5622WLMi.

I am unable to play various media in either Acer Arcade or Windows Media Player. I can play Real Audio and Real Video in using RealAlternative in Media Player Classic.

When I open an MP3 file up into Windows Media Player, it says "Invalid access to memory location". MP3s won't play in Acer Arcade.

WAV files will play in Sound Recorder and during Windows events, ie startup, new emails, shutdown etc, but they will not play in WMP and give the same message as with MP3s.

Other streamed files (eg WMA) and audio CDs won't play either. The "Invalid access to memory location" message comes up in WMP.

If I put a DVD in, WMP says "Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer." Acer Arcade does not play them or give an error message.

I have uninstalled WMP and re-installed several times, but it still does not work.
