i recently went to change my gas and electric with eon
i got a fone call from them saying that although the credit check passed okay, they wanted a £200 deposit off me.
i was gobsmacked and politely told them where to go!
is this right?
i am on an iva so am wondering if this has anything to do with it.

An IVA has absolutely everything to do with it I'm afraid. E.ON have to protect their revenue stream - with energy you are getting a product free of charge up front with the promise to pay later.
Asking for a deposit from a customer with a low credit rating isn't unheard of, some suppliers would insist on a prepayment meter so perhaps you have gotten away lightly.0 -

Please do not ask for credit as refusal often offends.0 -
Hi SPELLKASTER
Yes, as bob bank spanker says, with an IVA we'll ask for a security deposit.
This is currently £200 per fuel.
Provided all energy used is paid for, the deposit will be refunded on the final bill or after 12 months, whichever comes first.

so basically then i cant move my gas and electric because of an iva?
thats a bit unfair if you ask me!!
why i said clear off as i didnt have £200!!0 -
You can investigate if you can get yourself a cheaper tariff with your present provider.
You can move, there are just certain conditions. Nobody is obliged to give you energy up front for free. Again, many people in your circumstances are on a prepayment meter which limits them to standard tariff.0 -

How did you come to that conclusion?
As long as you don't owe more that £500 on the meter, you should be able to change suppliers.0 -

why i said clear off as i didnt have £200!!Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0 -

It's not £200, it's £400: £200 per fuel.
Why is it unfair? You are seen as a bad credit risk, no supplier is obliged to take you on. You may find one who is, other than Eon.
Surely you realised that entering an IVA would severely affect your ability to get credit? No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

The OP has not said that having a switch blocked is the problem-he/she has not advised of any existing debt on the account.
The problem is finding a supplier who wants to give him/her potentially unlimited credit. No free lunch, and no free laptop0
