Cancel Car Insurance

Options
I am considering cancelling my current car insurance policy but I would like some advice on the implications.

Less than a week ago i signed up (at the last minute) for my current policy with admiral but have since had terrible customer service in trying. This combined with the bad reviews i have since read are enough for mre to cancel if it does not cost me too much long term.

My main concern is the long term implications as many seach engines ask if ou have ever had insurance cancelled. Would i need to answer yes to this even if it is me doing the cancelling rather than the insurer? I have done a sample requote and it prices approx £50 more generally due to answering yes to this question but more importantly many insurers are omited from the search due to this answer (but not Admiral)

As I read my policy I would need to pay £22.50 to cancel my current policy as I am within the 14 day cooling off period. (also £5 per additional insurance - i assume this is the motor insurance policy and personal injury protection - £10 total).

Any advice/ opinions welcome

If you cancel the policy then there are no implications when you go elsewhere. You do not need to mention it!

The cancelling part is when the insurer for various reasons not you the customer deciding they dotn want the policy. You know the bad reviews could all be blown out of proportion, you only hear the view of the customer rather than that of the insurer.

The cancellation admin fee + any charges for legal protection ect. may need to be paid for in full.

+ ££ for time on cover.. If you paid the full you maybe out of pocket more than you think.

Just thought i would mention... If you are paying direct debit then cancelling that will not cancel the insurance.

If you google every insurance company there is you will find negative comments for all of them.

  • Thanks for the clarification on the cancelling

The alternative policy is £100 more with AA but I would get roadside breakdown cover and approx £20 cash back.

For my Admiral policy i paid in full on a debit card

Would I have to pay the legal protection and personal insury insurance in full? (these were approx £50 together I think)

As I read my policy I would only need to pay the £22.50 cancellation fee + £5 per other policy = £32.50.

I'm not sure what this means.

Insurers are not known for their customer service.

In fact the insurers who I've had good customer service with I had no contact with them at all.

All I can suggest you do is not to panic and not worry about it.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

  • I was insured with Admiral and had my daughter named on policy we both had accidents within a week of each other and the car was written off. It was only a year old.
Admiral customer service is not so good the claims handlers work in a team they don't call you back and they take ages to handle anthing. But at the end of the day they paid out when they should have, when ever I spoke to them they are courtious and polite and I have had a refund when they said I would. My daughter has insured with them again this year as they are the cheapest around.
  • when my policy was sent to me various items were different to the conversation i had on the phone.

    - the premium shown for a future multicar policy is different.

    - personal injury cover is not included on the multicar policy provided (but was included on the phone)

    - I have called several times and asked for this to be corrected and resent to me, which the advisors have assured me it will be. but this has never come. Instead I have been cut off 3/4 times and shouted at by an advisor.
