Baking powder, am I going mad?

Have the supermarkets removed all the tubs (170g) of baking powder to be replaced with small sachets at the same price for a much smaller quantity?

This happened in my Asda last month. I managed to get some from Morrisons so stocked up. My Asda now has the baking powder tubs back in, so hopefully yours will too.0

Tesco sells tubs xxWins in 2013 - Jan - Heinz No Noise Ketchup.0

Back in again at my ASDA - could have been something to do with Dr Oetker's.
They'd a promotion recently and were giving away some sachets/vouchers - THEN I noticed that they had altered the packaging!0 -

I did see Tesco's own brand in, but even then I think that was 99p for 100g, so in effect double the price, I'm off grocery shopping shortly so will re-check in Asda 1st, although the Dr Oeteker brand is not showing on the websites now
How am I going to maintain my position of the best muffin maker this side of the equator?0 -
I also think that stores reduce the stock they carry this time of year to make room for Christmas items, so instead of having small satchets and big tubs, they just have one option...and of course they go for the more expensive option because if you need baking powder, you're going to have to buy whatever they give you:mad:0

No! I ain't paying a pound odd for 6 sachets, luckily I went to the store and they had some tubs in again £1.280 -
I'm not saying you will necessarily have cream of tartar in your cupboard already, but if you do then the recipe for baking powder is very simple and very OS as it also has bicarb!

Mr T sells tubs; but they've changed the look, they're now taller and slimmer, with a pinkish label on, so not easy to spot when you're used to seeking a shorter, fatter tub with a brown label on.:DIf your dog thinks you're the best, don't seek a second opinion.;)0

The tubs seem to be reappearing in shops now - They are flashed "gluten free" and this is causing customers to buy the sachets as they are not looking for gluten free ingredients.
Looking at my old tub, the prime ingredient is wheat flour - which must be a bulking agent as baking powder is just bicarbonate of soda and cream of tartar. They now use maize starch instead of the wheat.
It is rather good marketing as many innocent bakers will buy the expensive sachets.
The cheapest ways if you use a lot is to buy bicarb and cream of tartar and add it to your mix yourself - it is just that we have got used to buying it premixed.
Who would have though that baking powder is really a convenience product!0 -
this is more shopping related so ive moved it to the relevant board for you

, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere (please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies.
