Er.. is it just me or do other people have cereal for their supper too?

You mean after your Oldstyle dinner, you've got room for more?:D:D

My kids always used to have a bowl of cereal before bed until I cottoned on to the fact they were getting fussier about eating their dinner knowing they would get to fill up later. Soon put a stop to that ;) and that was years ago so I'd forgotten that some people have 'supper'!

My son nibbles cereals all day long. He tends to eat 'loop' type cereals instead of sweets. Mind you, he does have porrige too.

Well maybe all day is an over exageration but he does eat them after a meal if hes still hungry. He eats Shreddies too.

I make my own muesli and it's really easy. You don't have to worry about added salt and sugar content either just don't add it. I don't measure anything just add until it looks right. I use a very large bowl and half fill it with oats. Then add a few crushed up weetabix or some all bran (depends on what I have in). Then in goes some chopped up dried fruit, apricots, sultanas, raisins, papaya etc. Then some nuts (normally walnuts).
I do add some linseeds as they are good for you, after that it is down to you. I have put in dessicated coconut and glace cherries, another time I went overboard and put in choc chips (not healthy I know but a yummy treat)
Out of preference I serve this with apple juice poured on but oh likes milk.
I just store it all in a large tupperware container (bought at a car boot sale of course).

Does porridge made with water taste okay?

Yes it does taste ok, just not quite as "creamy" - I'm one of the old school who has a pinch of salt and no sugar to mine. If I want it "sweetened" for the boys, it's either sultana's or a tsp of jam/marmalade.

I try to vary breakfasts here so we're not eating the same things 3 or 4 days in a row. Cereals are great, but we like a little variety (plus it balances the costs over the week)

    Homemade muesli
    Porridge (microwaves while I'm showering)
Toast (while I make a pot of tea)
Cereals are either: Shredded Wheat, Bran Flakes, Weetabix, Corned Flakes or Rice Pops (none presugared!)
Smoothies: yoghurt, milk and fruit (tinned or fresh) zooked up in the processor
Rice pudding: (leftovers, served cold with some jam or fruit)
Natural Yogurt with a chopped apple and a sprinkle of brown sugar on top.

It's me that has it with sultanas!

I have it hot in the winter, made with water & popped in the microwave for about 1 1/2 mins, and cold with milk in the summer, just mix & eat! I top it with sultanas or a tiny bit of honey to sweeten , a large spoonful of bran flakes or similar & occasionally a bit of dried fruit & nut mix or a grated apple if I'm feeling reckless.;)

Except, of course, Weetabix & all bran already have sugar & salt added :-0

I once read that the best breakfast you can have is as much fruit as you can manage to eat. There's some good in this, not least as a lot of fruit contains complex carbohydrates - these take the body a long time to break down, so you get a gentle trickle of (natural) sugar into the blood and avoid the yo-yo effect. This is what you get from an initial jolt of high-sugar food, which causes the body to flood the blood with insulin, which rapidly lowers the blood sugar level, which makes you reach for the Mars bar ..... etc.

So .. what about fresh fruit, now & then?

    Eggs?

Or do you really just want cereal?
