lost sound on computer

Suddenly I have no sound coming from my speaker even though the light is on, so I've tried using headphones plugged directly into the computer but still no sound
please can anyone give me a clue why this should happen, thankyou I hate not being able to listen to the radio online and hubby missed the cricket today too

    If you have a speaker icon by the clock on the right, place the mouse over it to check the volume level, say 60 - 100, or has it got a red X through it, if it hasn't, right click the speaker icon, click sounds, click playback. Are the speakers set to playback through the default device?
