Am contacting original installer re paperwork etc. I do not want to give him yet more time to sort out the problems - he installed systemj, said it was commissioned and working, had 3 weeks once I moved into property to sort it out during which time he replaced timer, room thermostat, wiring, etc etc but never checked temp on cylinder stat - I don't think I can be criticized for losing confidence in him.....

Boiler shows S30 when not working which I understand means it is not being called to fire so fault is elsewhere.

Have just bought replacement cylinder stat and will fix today as its the only thing original installer did not change.

Presumably all the controls are hard wired then and no wireless devices? Did he get an electrician in to wire it up? Hopefully its just a wiring issue..leaving aside the benchmark and warranty issues.

I think a cylinder 'stat is frankly the least of your problems. It's a red herring. Even if the cylinder stat was faulty, then it would not prevent the CH side from firing up when heat is called for.
I agree with the above post, most likely this guy doesn't have a clue on the electrical side, as indicated by the fact that he's not actually doing any fault finding, but just swapping components blindly in the hope that something will work.
    Did you check his reg?
It's pretty clear to me that the boiler has not been reg'd with Vaillant and as things stand you have no warranty.
I'd give him 7 days in writing to resolve the issues, otherwise proceeed via the small claim process to recover your losses.

  • the clue is in your first post, heating doesn't work unless you tweak the cylinder stat, ie it's wired wrong, you need either a RGI or a sparkie that knows what he's doing with wiring a heating system, not all RGI's or sparkies know how to do this (i never wire a heating system i've got a good sparkie that does mine)

Agreed..as stated in post #15,many RGIs do not bother with system wireups simply because it isnt cost effective. They have a trusted sparkie to do it for them though many will do wireless installs as its much easier.

It is imperative that clueless people do not faff about with wiring on modern boilers as many of them have voltage free control loops and it is therefore easy to fry a boiler control system by injudicious application of the wrong voltages.

Thanks for the suggestions re getting wiring checked - will do so, and will give ultimatum re paperwork for boiler installation.

Have replaced cylinder stat (the one I took off did not look new even though the cylinder was replaced - strange) and so far heating has come on and stayed on.

    Hardly rocket science though.

No indeed. All thats needed is a wiring centre and a diagram. A lot of RGIs nevertheless prefer not to touch it as it isnt their area of expertise.

  • Have taken some of the friendly advice given above and contacted original installer who will be issuing paperwork this weekend so boiler will have its warranty.

Actual problem seems to have been with the cylinder stat - replaced yesterday and system is for the first time working as I would have expected. Dont know why the cylinder stat was dismissed out of hand by some of the respondents above - only cost £20 to replace before looking at more expensive options.

    Thanks again

because the cylinder stat has nothing at all to do with the heating system, this measures the temp in your cylinder & switches the boiler on or off to heat up the cylinder, it in no way should control your rads so as your first post said that you have to tweak the stat to turn on your heating this would mean it's wired incorrectly & just by you replacing the stat won't alter this fact
