Car insurance: Privilege? RAC?

Options
It's renewal time again and I've been checking out other possibilities against LV's renewal quote.

Both Privilege and RAC are coming up well, and I was just wondering if anyone who has had experience with either or both could comment on how good/bad they are in the event of needing to claim.

Thank you!

  • RAC is just a rebrand of Budget Insurance brokers, you can google them for opinions.

Privilege is an actual insurer and is part of the Direct Line Group family of insurance companies (inc Direct Line, Churchill etc). Whilst the proposition is a little different between the brands the service has always been fairly uniform

I've always found Privilege just about the most competitive come renewal time.
Also they are generous with giving NCD to a named driver, and in my case, remarkably un-quibbly about insuring a car that had been modified for LPG.
The only thing they wouldn't do is insure a 17-year old learner - 18+ only.

You need to check the policy details before you buy!

eg. RAC have some differences from normal policies:

eg. DOC cover is granted only to the main driver (irrespective of whether or not the main driver is the policyholder)

eg. NCD is only accepted from AND only earned by the main driver (again irrespective of whether or not that is the policyholder)

Thanks, Quentin, and don't worry: I'd always check the details first!

As it is, I've not been too happy with the reviews I've seen for both these and I may end up sticking with LV, which at least gets good reviews from Which ...

Maybe have a look here - you can see star ratings and compare features.

Many thanks, Scarlett. I've now gone with my previous provider (LV) - mainly because, while they didn't score too well at the Review Centre, they did do well with Which. I didn't know aobut the defaqto site, though: have saved to my Favorites for next year!
