I flew to the US a couple of times last year with Virgin; the flight back was a United "partner" one.

Apart from the staff not being so polite, the rest was fine - it had movies.

Perhaps also consider which aircraft seating would suit the size of your party.

2-3-2, 2-4-2 and 2-5-2 can be good for 2 people

2-3-2, 3-4-3 and 3-3-3 can be good for 3 people

2-4-2 and 3-4-3 can be good for 4 people.

2-5-2 can be good for 5 people

    https://www.seatguru.com has lots of details.

Do any transatlantic airlines still have 2-5-2?

Roughly, Asian airlines are better than European, and European are better than American.

Premium products are vastly different, but in economy they are all basically the same.

Base your decision making on cost, schedule or availability of direct flights.

We've flown with all 3 and to be honest there wasn't too much difference between them. US Airways had the worst food by a long way but other than that they were pretty similar in terms customer service, in flight comfort etc.

I think sometimes people's opinions on 'best' can be shaped by the experiences they have with that supplier so I'm sure there will be others that come on with warnings about these airlines. For example, I know you haven't listed them but we've had nothing but good experiences with Delta and would probably pick them over the others if price allowed. On the other hand, one of my worst flight experiences was with Emirates, an airline that many people consider good.

At the end of the day though if the 'plane arrives safely it's been a good flight for me. That's far higher up in my list of requirements than seat width, in flight entertainment or food :)
  • Definitely not American Airlines. Legroom was rubbish on their 777. My favourite is US Airways, but United are good too. Food wise they're all pretty much on par, as is staff service.

agree, and the type of plane...I read regularly here how XX airline is crap because it has no seat-back entertainment when some of their planes do, others don't...we always research the aircraft type to be sure we know what we are getting...sometimes the same airline will have multiple flights per day out of a specific airport on different types of aircraft and the difference can be pretty big, we think.

I'm not sure that any of the United or US Airways aircraft types have a bigger seat pitch than similar aircraft operated by AA, for example...so perception of relative legroom between the airlines may be down to other factors.

We like AA 777s because of the 2-5-2 configuration as much better chance we will have 2 seats on our own.

I've had bad experiences with Delta. A stewardess spilt a beer on my head then just threw a napkin at me with no apology before walking off. I had a horrendous landing due to a typhoon on another Delta flight and the crew didn't even warn us it would be bumpy never mind the scariest thing I've ever experienced! However, I found their US call centre excellent at sorting out alternative flights for me when a connecting airport was closed due to snow even though I'd booked via Expedia and their system said it was an Air France ticket.

I don't mind AA depending on the route. I've often managed to get whole aisles of seats to myself.

I like United if its in Economy Plus which doesn't cost much to upgrade to.

I tend to base my choice on price and if I can see the seat plan before I pay to ensure I don't get stuck with a middle seat on a long flight. I think United, AA and Delta let you choose your seat before you enter your credit card details.
