Paint Stripping

I have just bought a cart for my pony which needs quite a bit of work done on it, mainly repainting. After rubbing down a little bit today, it is clear it has had quite a few different colours over the years (painted every 2 years ), ideally, I want to strip all the paint off the wood and metal and start afresh.
Looking in the DIY stores today, all paint stripper seems really expensive and has a lot of toxins in, can anyone suggest something, on the cheap side, which will remove the old paint, or is it just a case of rubbing it all off with sandpaper ?
Thanks

We bought a heat gun in B&Q for £15 and has been a god send for stripping back to bare wood.
I tried with the chemical paint strippers and found them useless, only took off about 2 layers at a time, hence getting the heat gun.Work like you don't need money,Love like you've never been hurt,And dance like no one's watchingSave the cheerleader, save the world!0 -
Heat guns are worth the extra instead of the paint strippers. Cheap paint strippers can be bought from the likes of the £1 shops usually if you want to try them, most have same ingredients in them anyway.
One thing I will say to be careful of is that if the paint is very old, some old paints were lead based. Always worth wearing a mask when doing such jobs but more so with the possibility of lead. One day I might be more organised...........
