blocked sink when using dishwasher

  • You could just buy a chemical unblock and pour from above...

Not very MSE but a lot less messy

the dw hose isn't installed correctly it should go up in the air before it connects to the trap, atm whatever you pour into the sink is going back into the dw ie dirty water, so by doing what you suggest is just going to fill up the dw with Mr Muscle

thank you very much keystone for taking the time to explain and illustrate that

I undid the trap (indicated C) before I read your post but it came away ok...the pipe above (between B and C) pushed up just enough to free the trap. I put an old towel underneath and that soaked up all the water.

The trap was full of silt and stuff and I washed that out ..not in that sink :)
and reconnected...unfortunately that didn't work and water is still coming up from the dishwasher and staying in the sink

I checked the outside drain and that is taking water fine.

southcoastrgi...could you explain that again about the dw hose not being connected correctly and what do I need to do to sort it out...is that a plumber type job?

    cheers

If your blockage is in the trap it is most probably in the horizontal section - around the the left hand knurled nut B when looking at the picture. If its not there then its further down the pipe and your only access to that is by removing the trap completely..

  • should go up at high level then down to the trap, or even if you didn't have a blocked waste pipe what ever you pour down the sink can & will go back into the d/w

  • I undid the rubber tubing from 'A' and the small amount of water in the sink emptied. This tubing goes through a hole drilled in the back of the unit and I imagine then it goes into the back of the dishwasher. I'll check all that this weekend.

So you let air into the trap which allowed water to flow out of the sink. OK so what happens if you take that pipe off altogether, fill the sink up with a few litres, seal the end of the spigot (the pointy bit the DW pipe is attached to) with your thumb so that nothing will come out and pull the plug in the sink? Does it flow freely or slowly?

Check that the sink overflow isn't blocked up and as well as having a look in the rest of the trap and the horizontal pipe to make sure they are clear see if the other end of the waste pipe is under water or not.
