internet security for kids

Hi my son is asking to use our lap top more and more. He like googling info for topics we have discussed and playing on PowerPoint and word. I am keen to encourage good it skills and we have bought him a netbook for Christmas as my hubby and I both share the 1 laptop. Anyway I would normally have him in same room as us when on the computer and check what he's doing regularly but I am worried he might accidentaly stumble on something when he is googling - he is interested in many random Topix and trivia! We have set basic settings on windows and Firefox but I would like to download additional software - are open and or k9 the best ones to pick? Any recco.endarions please?
Thanks
