Just bought a car, want to SORN it
I just bought a used car today. It was MOTed and Taxed until Oct 2013. I bought a temporary insurance for one day for driving the car back to my driveway. This is my first and only car, so I don't have other insurance to cover it. Because I will not use the car in the next 2-4 weeks, I want to SORN the car from tomorrow. But I do not know how to proceed without the V5 form from DVLA. Will I get fined because of no insurance while I am indeed unable to SORN?

Go Online if you have bought it the previous keeper has given you the certificate?????
I only have a little slip. I am not sure if I should proceed online with SORN. I am not sure when ex-owner would send his V5 form and how long it would take to arrive DVLA, and how long DVLA would take to update their database. If I do it online, surely DVLA will send all the stuff incl. refunded road tax to the previous driver?
Below are quoted from DVLA website, sorry that I am not allowed to post URLsWhat address is the tax disc or SORN confirmation sent to?
The tax disc and the payment receipt will be sent to the registered keeper's address currently held by DVLA and should arrive In the post within 5 working days.
If you make a SORN on our website, the confirmation page can be printed and used as confirmation. Also, if you provide your email address on the website you will receive an email confirmation of the transaction. An acknowledgement letter will not be sent.
Do not use this service if you have recently moved and you have not yet received the Registration Certificate in your new address.0 -
Just did some search on DVLA's website.
It seems that it is the registered keeper's responsibility to keep the car insured. And I will not be the registered keeper until the new V5C form from DVLA arrived.
I will wait for the new V5C to arrive, and to insure the car or to SORN it.
Thanks!0 -
Yes you are the registered keeper.
The previous owner will have sent the form off. Your the registered keeper from the date they put on the form.
Just because you dont have the new V5C does not mean your not the registered keeper.
Sometimes the V5C gets lots. But your still the registered keeper. And now responsible for SORN, TAX, INSURANCE and all fines that apply to the vehicle.
Best to SORN it if you dont have it taxed AND insured.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
Isn't it 14 days before continuous insurance enforcement kicks in and they write you a snot-o-gram telling you to insure the car or SORN it?
In any case they aren't going to do anything in the first week as it can take that long for the MIB database to get updated anyway.
You aren't going to lose any money by waiting a week either as they will only refund whole months.0
