Sealing up overflow in bath

My bath overflow leaks into the room below, so we have to be very careful not to overfill the bath. The overflow is one of the type that you have to rotate to push the plug up and out, and it's also broken and coming out of the hole in the bath side where it was placed. I'm using a universal plug now, so I don't have to rotate it, and I've also tried to plug the fitting with sealant tape.

However the sealant tape doesn't really work, even against small splashes. My big problem is that the bath is cemented in with taps at the back, not the side, and it'll cost hundreds to remove the bath, fix the leak and tile/plaster everything back in.

Is there any better way of sealing the overflow hole? It's about 2-3 inches in diameter.

Try some polymorph. You heat the beads in water and they form a mouldable plastic that sets completely solid. You can mold it to the exact shape of the opening, take out the set piece then glue it in with some epoxy.

So how is it broken? Is it really broken or has it just come loose? Bunging the hole up with a load of muck is premature until you have exhausted all other possibilities.

and you expect me to accept that as gospel? Go on humour me. How is it broken or has it just come undone? If its just come loose it can be fixed. If its broken it may be fixable without ripping out the bath. I may be tilting at a windmilll here but theres a chance I'm not. Want to take it?

As Keystone says - have a look yourself - there's a long flexible pipe that connects from the overflow unit on the side of the bath to the underside of the plughole. If that's fallen off or split it might be possible to get a new one on without taking the bath out.

bath has taps and overflow at the side that is least accessible.

sounds near impossible to access to replace the overflow pipe, however if the break/leak was near the bottom, wouldn't the bath emptying affect it? 18" of water would in theory raise up the overflow and spill from there too when emptying the bath?

so, maye the leak is just the fitting of the plug control/overflow. So get all that off and have a go at sorting it out?

we had a similar problem but the overflow had come away from the bath it just needed resealing although my insurance did have to pay for a new kitchen ceiling.

  • keystone, I'm just off the M3 near J4a, want to come and fix it? ;-)

Thanks everyone. It would probably be an easy fix if I could only get at it.
