Do not contact the gas company over the phone any more. Contact them in writing, use record delivery if you are sending letters, and explain everything. Give them 21 days to reply with a decent reply then go straight to energywatch with your letter and reply.

I have just been told by someone they did things over the phone and now the gas company are denying everything.

Something is seriously wrong here although I can see why the gas company thought she was a business, that sort of usage is almost on an industrial scale!

Assuming the heating takes most of the gas and ignoring any inefficiencies etc then the 4 radiators going over 6 hours must be putting out around 25 KW each if the figres are correct. Thats a very big radiator!

You really need to find out why this reading is so high. Maybe there is something wrong with the gas meter or a leak somewhere.

I also think it would be a good idea to get in touch with a solicitor to see about getting some money back (sounds like your mum could be entitled to a substantial sum).

Thanks everyone for all the advice. I'll certainly pursue the refund issue (in writing!) - they are very good at convincing you that they are doing their best for you, but you've reminded me it takes a push to get anything done. Hopefully won't get to the stage of needing a solicitor, but i'm not opposed to that idea if it comes to it. Also will get meter and boiler thoroughly checked for leakage.
