What a Charmer

Called from 01159 954 0170, assumed an Indian call centre due to the accent, but the number is Nottingham.

I owe a staggering £33 for electric to BG.

This is the conversation as I recall.

"Hello, you owe £33 so pay us now or your electricity will be cut off in two days.

"I can't pay today. I'm on pension credit, but house sale completion will take place before Christmas, I can pay then.

"Sorry, we cannot help you then, goodbye" Cut off.

Is the man from the assumed call centre psychic, how does he know you have no card details?

That is an obvious scam, no supplier would be even mentioning the words " we will cut you off " Thats an extremely last resort nowadays and very rare. They much prefer the prepay meter route . Scammer has picked a deliberately low ammount as most of us could be owing that much. They may hit on the very elderly/confused eventually who may fall for that trick

    eh.....

someone called you from a nottingham number. claiming they were from BG. wantin a payment.

BG call from 0800, so not BG + they dont have call centers in Nottingham.

whoever called you was hoping to scam you, by getting your card detail if you had been gullable enough to hand them over.

BG do not 'cut off your electricity'. It's a well known, scam, usually pretending to be BT and threatening to cut your phone off.
    BG is a new angle.
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Sorry for snapping and thanks to all who replied. Yesterday was a baddun, and that call topped it off.

It was indeed a genuine number as after reading your posts, I rung it. "Thankyou for ringing British Gas."

Spoke to them today who said it was nonsense I would be cut off and offered their sincere apologies.
"Take a reading the day you move out and we will add the £33 to your bill."

I will though send a complaint on their site re. the original call, as although I was able to come here and take it out on you,:o someone else might be tipped over the edge, thinking they were about to lose their electricity. Imagine someone being driven to take out a payday loan for instance.

    Thanks everyone.:)

Well they are not going to answer the number "Welcome to the Indian Scam Centre." are they?
