Help choosing a new TV for parents

My M and D (early 80s) want to replace their old CRT TV, and have been looking at the LED smart TVs that are around. They have freeview only, and want to be able to record programmes that are on after their bedtimes! Mainly on the BBC channels. They have BT wireless.

I have looked at the Samsung 40" that they have mentioned and wonder whether it will do what they want it to, or whether it is actually too much technology for them! All the technical talk coming up in my research is bamboozling ME, and I have a samsung phone and a tablet!

They don't want 3D, would rather have one remote that controls everything, and of course the record function.

What would be their best route (and easiest for me to set up:rotfl:!)?

Thanks.
Taking control, slowly.:rotfl: :rotfl:

A pvr, and a tv that suits their needs/budget, some smart tv's and pvr's and dvd player/games consoles also have iplayer functionality

  • Another vote for the TV / PVR combination.

I've not seen a TV where the recording function is as good as a Humax PVR in usability terms.

As strange as it may seem, very few TVs are twin tuners these days, so if they want to record and watch a different channel, they will need a separate recorder.

If that's the case, they will need a stand-alone recorder, no ifs or buts... well, unless they want to spend over £1000 on a Loewe 32inch tv.

As for whether they want 3D, that's actually irrelevent. TVs that are capable of displaying 3D tend to also have the best 2D pictures, so if they see a TV that looks great in 2D and can do 3D, and none of the 2D only TVs come close in picture quality, they'll have to get a 3D tv.

I echo the recommendations for a humax PVR because they're great, then go for either a panasonic or samsung TV. I personally prefer panasonic, but all that matters if what picture they find to be the best for them.

Im about to buy a Humax fox sat. Found a great priced on at Richer Sounds with a 500 memory. Cost is £214 and I have a £10 voucher off too. It will cost me £70 to have it fitted. Im happy with that, and Ive been shopping around for a while.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
