NAS problem

Hi, I've asked before and never really got anywhere so thought I'd rephrase. I've got a Belkin router and Iomega NAS drive. The drive always shows up in the router DHCP list with its MAC number. It always pings on 192.168.2.4 with max 1ms 0 packets lost. It only rarely shows up on my computer though. Just doesn't seem to connect. If I reboot both the drive and router it will connect for a short while but then disappears again. Any ideas would be gratefully received.
Apparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. Happy birthday to me...etc

hard to diagnose
could be faulty, out of data firmware, loose lan cable, software firewall, power saving timeout, windows7 smb problems, router settings
try mapping a drive to it in windows explorer, or by using the net use command
can you identify a pattern to the connection loss, eg after x amount of time, does it still ping when the mapping is lost!!

Hi, it will always ping whether visible or not. It's always in the DHCP/MAC list for the router. Can't find a repeatable pattern with respect to timing etc. When it is visible, it can be rock solid, accessing large files etc. Windows firewall switched off. I'm using windows 8 now and not sure if it was reliable with windows 7 because I installed win 8 and the NAS drive within a short time of each other.
Have used more than one cable to test.
Cheers.Apparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. Happy birthday to me...etc0 -
when it fails, does clicking on the drive mapping (assuming you have one) refresh it, or using the net use command from the command prompt!!

What make and model is the NAS.
I have one and similar effect was.
It turn on but wasn't accessible. Reason was it was on safe mode.
I downloaded the utility from the website and unlocked it reboot and sorted.0 -
Hi, it's an Iomega Home Media 2TB. I'll have a go with the command prompt instructions. By the way, if I out the IP into the address bar, IE just hangs.Apparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. Happy birthday to me...etc0

I note the IP address you quote.
I take it that the rest of your PCs are on 192.168.2.x addresses or you have made the subnet larger than the typical 1 - 254 range for some reason.
Is the NAS on a static IP address ?
I have storage devices on fixed addresses at the top of the range (over 200).
I don't have trouble with my current router (Draytek) but in the past I've mapped drives using IP address rather than names and those two approaches made everything solid in the Windows 98/XP days.
My current setup with Windows 7 "just worked".0 -

Hi. i haven't made it a static IP so it just allocates in the series 192.168.2.#, the router being .1, laptop .2 and printer .3 I think.
Is it worth trying to allocate a static IP? I'll give it a go.Apparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. Happy birthday to me...etc0 -

You have nothing to lose by trying, and you can revert to DHCP if this does not resolve the issue you are experiencing. How do I add a signature?0 -
no joy. i'm going to borrow a different router and if that doesn't do it, a win7 laptop.Apparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. Happy birthday to me...etc0

I was just checking with the question that there wasn't anything deliberately "unusual" for a domestic set up.
Yes, try a static IP towards the top of the range (192.168.2.201 for example).
Then in "My Network Places"
"Add a Network place"
"Next"
"Choose another network location"
then enter your NAS IP address as
\\192.168.2.201\
This should create a "network place" based on the IP address rather than name and my guess is this will fix your problem.
I would be interested to see if this does it for you.0
