As long as you have a network card in both computers. A crossover Cat5 cable is all you need to link both computers. You can pick one up for much less than a tenner.
The method to share files and set up a small LAN will differ depending on the operating system you use, but is not too difficult. How many surrealists does it take to change a lightbulb?

how do i check if i have a network card in my computer i am using windows xp and installed all the network things it asked me to install i will be connecting a p4 computer and a p2 computer do i need any hub thing? or shall i just stick that cable in the back of both of them and it shuld find the network on its own0 -
Network cards normally have an RJ45 plug to connect to. If you have this on both machines then I presume the card is already installed. Most recent computers have this as standard now.

Right-click 'My Computer,' select 'Properties,' click on the 'Hardware' tab and select 'Device Manager.'
Scroll down to 'Network Adapters' and click on the plus sign. That will show you if you have a NIC installed.
If you're still unsure, post what you find on here and somebody will help you out.

your 2 ethernet cards are the Via Rhine and the Intel Pro.
Just run the Network Setup Wizard from the Control Panel on each pc.
You will need a crossover patch cable though unless the NICs are autosensing.
