It is a long term progressive problem that no party seem to be able to resolve. The 2002 -2008 fiction was just one attempt to mask it. Previous governments have used other means hide the problem.

We have run out of sticking plaster.

    Thats because they arent trying.

For example, its strange how the government couldnt save Rover because its too much money/against EU rules etc. yet suddenly its fine to hurl £100bns and £100bns at the banks

And Germany are likely to head into recession on the release of their next figures.

Is this the tories fault too?

If the EU goes down, then so do we, and there is no magic wand that the tories can wave to save us from that.

You were singing from a different hymn sheet when Labour were buffeted by the GLOBAL crisis in 2007+.

Well your book has a different cover to most others. It's a special book ;)

How you can conclude that a U-Turn is not a political party admitting they were wrong is beyond me. I've seen you state as much before now when you say they get things wrong and then u-turn.

It begs the question again...what WOULD suit you? They admit they have made a mistake, but then don't u-turn on it?! It's another case of not a single thing would suit you.

You have made a vaid point Graham and I agree with many of your points but I have not yet heard them admit their mistakes openly, maybe they have and I missed hearing them, but they seem only to give another reasons for their u-turns.

And you have to admit that many of the policies that they have u-turned on, were very poorly thought out policies in the first place, not what you would expect from people with such a high education.

I would dearly like them to at least give the public a hearing rather than treating us like second class citizens.

How do you know? I wasn't even actively posting on this forum! Infact, this particular forum didn't even exist!

And in any case, were we not still giving away free laptops at that point?

Rover going down did not take the whole economy with it. The banks failing would have.

If one party - either of them - come up with a plan to DRASTICALLY cut general spending (not just minor adjustments that have been made to date), while at the same time investing in TRUE economy building projects - then they will have my vote. Any party who doesnt see the need to cut spending drastically will NEVER get my vote.

This was exactly what I was getting at in my earlier post. We need much bigger spending on infrastructure projects, inclouding housebuilding, to give us a chance of being a competetive economy in the future. At the same time, however, some very unpopular decisions have to be made about all items of public spending which, although desirable, are not essential. A proper review should allow us to make huge spending cuts, but in making those cuts any political party would effectively make themselves unelectable.

Sadly, as all politicians are more interested in being elected/reelected than solving the economic problems that we face going forward, you can be certain that none will be brave enough to grasp the nettle.

No point in being brave and out of office.

    Borrowing has fallen.

The big black hole is bigger now than when the Tories came into office 2 and half years ago.
after two and a half years of austerity, the Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) is likely to say that the fiscal hole that Mr Osborne promised to eliminate in five years, back in May 2010, is actually bigger now than it was then.
On his own chosen measure, we will probably find out today that the chancellor has literally nothing to show for nearly three years of austerity.

And that's why the Tories won't win the next election. They have failed to live up to their promises : they promised to reduce the debt and its getting bigger !!!!!!.

It wouldn't have cost anywhere near as much either, pennies in comparison Sheffield Forgemasters wouldn't have either.

Never mind we can simply import the goods.

What good would it have done? Kept a few thousand in work building rubbish cars that nobody wanted to buy.

Jaguar Landrover doing well though once the unions had been defeated
