Was told by British Gas they supply both my gas and electricity?

I moved in to a my new flat about a 5 weeks ago which is owned by the council. They told me that my electric is run by British Gas and my gas in supplied by EDF.
The day my tenancy started I phoned to tell them I just moved in. I phoned EDF first but couldn't get through so phoned British Gas just to do my electric.
The woman I spoke to said that they supply both my gas and electric so I told the woman was told EDF supply my gas and she stated "no we do both gas and electric for this address I should know I've got the details right in front of me"
So I gave them both the meter readings for both my gas and electric and left it at that (unfortunately I didn't take a note of this for my self but I know for next time).
A few days later I got the letter from British Gas with a welcome letter which also states they do both my gas and electric.
However, when I first moved in I returned to EDF some letters belonging to the previous tenant.
So I'm wondering if British Gas lied to me? Is it possible for them to just say this?
Is it possible for EDF to call and say you didn't register with us or write letters in the future saying that I owe them money even though I have letters from British Gas saying they supply both my gas and electric??

I forgot to say that the council did phone on my behalf as I'm a new council tenant and the letter definitly said edf was gas and electric was british gas. I should have probably phoned EDF after speaking with British Gas just to confirm

It's possible the previous tenant moved supplier near the end and didn't tell the council
Keep a note of your readings (even just from today), then go and have a look at the comparison sites.
You may need to guess the consumption levels, but you'll get a general idea of which tariffs are cheapest (usually online/DD).
Find a tariff/supplier that works for you and switch - then you'll know for sure who you are with!
