I asked my Facebook friends for their input, and one has a telescope that they have kindly given my son for FREE. Now that is money saving. Considering after about 5 minutes it wil just become a stylish clothes horse.
:TIs thankful to those who have shared their :T
:T fortune with those less fortunate :T
:T than themselves - you know who you are!

  • I got a similar telescope for my daughter years ago from Aldi pretty rubbish

I know is not same thing but I do find some nice apps on android that are good for telling you whats in night sky you just point it into sky and it tells you what you are looking at

Google do a free night sky app. I use it on my tablet

Would this be any good for my 10 year old. He's been asking for a telescope for a couple of years now. But i didn't want to waste money on a cheap toy version which would only leave him disappointed.
  • If you have a telescope sitting unused it may be because its not being used properly try and find a local astronomy group and they may be able to help you. My husband who has more than his fair share of telescopes recommends people who are starting not spending loads or even getting them off ebay (pick up locally his best bargain being 99p!) but some can be adapted with "spare" bits that these groups may have. They showed some one how to use one the owner had thought didnt work well for 2 years or so and it was fine. These groups are hopefully friendly and the one in our hall meets once a month for the grand sum of £2 so if you can find a group like that go along and ask or just ring them and they will help for free. They also share there scopes/binoculars so you can decide before buying one if it isnt going to be used. Some telescope shops have lists of amateur groups or look in local village halls etc

You can see for as far as the eye can,
I rather thought the purpose of a telescope was to increase that distance (several fold).
