home insurance claim problem

hi all
about 3 weeks ago some one tried to break into our garage.
We called the police and our insurance(directline).
Our insurance sent out a company called Evander to look at the garage door and do a report on the damage.
As the door is about 18yrs old there is some wear in the door hinges and a bit of rot in the frame.
neither of these issues stopped the door opening before the attempted break in.
Now the door will not open on the door lifter and is a pain to open manually.
Our insurance is now saying that they wont pay for the door but have offered to pay for half leaving us to pay £1042.
They claim that because of the doors age and the wear and tear they dont have to cover it or pay for a replacement even though we have new for old cover.
any help would be great.
thanks

Wear and tear and rot,
They could be putting it down to lack of maintenance.
In fact they could have just turned down your claim altogether for the same reason.
This way you at least get a repair half price...make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
Your policy will almost certainly include a clause that you must keep your property in a well maintained state. As you say it is rotting then there is a breach of the policy terms and hence the deduction0

A garage door forms part of the buildings. Buildings cover isn't new for old.
We will pay the cost of rebuilding or repairing the part of the building which is damaged by any cause insured under this section 1. We will not take off any amount for wear and tear as long as, at the time of the damage, the buildings were in a good state of repair0 -
hi
The rot in the frame is only on a facia piece nailed to the frame.
just havent got around to replacing it.
Door has been maintained (greased and cable changed).
Evander may have painted a worse picture about the condition.
thanks for you feedback0
