Waitrose and Ocado

Options
I usually shop with Sainsburys but they have really let me down badly for the third time as well. Standards fall that quickly and it has got to have something to do with locasl management.

So I tried Waitrose and got free delivery on shopping worth about £60. Very good.

But they did not have everything I wanted so I got the rest from Ocado who are charging £6.99 for delivery of £48.86 worth of shopping.

I am so confused. Ocado sells Waitrose stuff so they appear to be the same people but the discrepancy between delivery charges is enormous.

Can anyone tell me what is going on?

    Thank you both for replying.

I prefer the WEaitrose site and I like their own brand cleaning stuff.

I wish I were not so fussy about which bread I like but Allisons is my favourite and only Sainsburys and Ocado sell it and then you ususally only get it mid week and that has always been OK with me as Sainsburys give you free delivery if you do a £100 shop.

What I dont get is why Sainsburys can be so good for so long and now durrrrrrrrrrrr.

I must try late delivery shopping with Ocado.

Ocado was founded by two former bankers and has never been wholly owned by Waitrose. Waitrose is a major supplier but Ocado has own brand products as well.

In my experience, Ocado does usually have the same offers as Waitrose as well as offers of their own. Ocado now has a Cheaper Than Tesco price promise too. I don't buy many branded goods but since this came in, my weekly branded goods have been cheaper than Tesco every week.

Waitrose matches non-offer Tesco prices weekly.

Waitrose doesn't charge for delivery for any slot, but minimum order is £50 whereas with Ocado it is £40. It is possible to get free slots by using very early/late night delivery slots and codes. I have a Delivery Savings Pass. My weekly weekend delivery would normally cost 6.99 per week but I got the Delivery Pass 50% off so I am getting free delivery over the year.

I switched to Ocado because Ocado has a bigger range of Waitrose products and organic products than my local Waitrose store. I do still visit that store sometimes and I can't fault Waitrose in-store or the delivery service. I don't like the new website though, it's not as easy to use.

The Ocado website is huge but pretty easy to use. It seems to give extra offers of your own based on things you favourite or buy regularly, if my assumption is correct. There's also a clearance section which offers up to 1/3rd off AFAIK.

I wouldn't hesitate in recommending either company. The drivers are courteous, customer services dept very good, mistakes are very rare too. With Waitrose you can specify no substitutions, with Ocado you just hand them back.

Re: payment, Ocado doesn't actually charge the card until the delivery is made but they may well put an authorisation on it in advance, I don't know.

If you hadn't ordered from Ocado previously you should have got free delivery and around £20 off on first order IIRC.
  • If you live anywhere near Bristol don't bother with Ocado.

If you're using Waitrose or Ocado for organic food, then there is a third option, Abel & Cole. https://www.abelandcole.co.uk

Delivery is 99p and minimum order £10. You don't need to be in when they deliver and you can specify that they leave stuff in a porch or garage and can even give them a key for a commual hall. Customer services is great and sort out any little probs.

Some of the vegetables are more expensive than supermarkets, but the range is way bigger. They have lots of things you won't find anywhere else.

When they have a special offer it IS a special offer, there's none of this yo yo pricing going on.

I use both Waitrose and Ocado, but prefer Ocado because the Waitrose website is so dismal. With Ocado I can look at hundreds of items on one page, and the pictures and descriptions are clear. I also have a delivery pass which I pay for annually which simply means that I can get my shopping exactly when I need it, and so I find the cost worthwhile.

I rarely buy much veg from either online store (or meat either), but pick it up during the week from local shops. I have a thing about getting really fresh good quality veg, and I don't trust anyone but me to pick out really good fruit!
  • Thank you all for the info. I got a lot of my missing shopping from Sainsburys late yesterday afternoon but not the fresh chicken. The people who come to the door and answer the phone are all so polite but something is very wrong at Sainsburys in SW London.

I think they owe me about £12.86 and now I have emiled them for a refund. I paid 6.99 for a deivery from Ocado but now I know how to get round that I will in future.

My old eyes actually prefer Waitrose site but Ocado sells just about everything so between them both I should be OK without Sainsburys. It is a shame because I cannot go shopping because of disability and they have been really good to me.
  • Just to let you know I finally got a refund of £12.86 and a "good will gesture" of £15 (but half of that gesture went on the delivery charge due to Ocado) so I am no longer out of pocket.

I think as far as food shopping I will not be going to Sainsburys for a long time.
