Royal Mail refund issue??

The third reply from RM received today says that I must recover the original item and packing from the buyer, although they agreed at first to accept detailed photos because of the size of the item.
The most annoying thing is that they will not address the issue of the £46 loss or damage supposedly covered by first class mail, even though I specifically asked this question in writing on three occasions.
As the buyer has now moved, they no longer have the packing and I cannot take my claim any further with RM but I can email the Postal Review Panel.
It looks like I have to take the loss for the postman's/woman's (accepted) action of throwing the parcel over the gate and on to a concrete path
In all this I now just want them to clarify why "the service I used does not carry this (£40) sort of compensation", when First Class should cover £46 loss or damage!?

Why not sue the postman direct? He chucked your property over the fenceOne important thing to remember is that when you get to the end of this sentence, you'll realise it's just my sig.0

Out of interest has anyone here on MSE successfully claimed up to £46 on loss or damage to First Class post?
TIA
