Am I obliged to post abroad when i list as UK only?

Hi another ebay question sorry :o

Ok so i sold an item that ended 7th Nov. Turns the buyer is from Hungary. I clearly state in my listing postage to UK only.
I assumed as a month has now past and no payment or communication from buyer, that the buyer has realised i do not post so just never paid.

I have had a msg today asking how much is postage.
Do I HAVE see this through, what if i just email her and say im sorry but i only post to uk, can she leave neg f/b ??
Thanks

If you stated UK only in your listing you can cancel the sale. This will mean that you'll probably need to relist the item or offer it as a second chance to the next highest bidder if there was one. The only other option is to work out and charge the additional postage and send the item to them anyway as long as it seems like a genuine purchase. Make sure that before you list anything else you change your setting to block bids from overseas bidders to orevent this from happening again.

It is not enough to just put in your listing you don't post overseas. You also need to put this in your buyer/seller preferences. Effectively you will be blocking bids from designated countries.

With your buyer from Hungary, I would quote delivery costs to include an appropriate tracking service, and ask if they wish to cancel because of the postage charges.

Posting to Hungary is relatively easy. It's in the EU so no customs forms are needed and all you need to do is find the correct price for the weight of the item and ask the buyer to pay it, then it goes in your normal postbag to the PO or the postbox.

Tracking on cheap items is silly, as it costs £5 and will no doubt annoy the buyer. It doesn't insure and it doesn't even guarantee proof of delivery unless the Hungarian postal service acquires and uploads a signature.

You are covered for up to £46 with standard proof of posting, just like for domestic services.

If you don't want to send and you want to avoid neg this is what I do:

Either: Say you can only post by a tracked signed for method at say £15 make the shipping high, then when they turn around and say sorry can you send by a cheaper method, say no this is the cheapest signed for tracked method. Then, wait a few days hope they don't pay and open a dispute against them after a few days claim ur final fee back.

Or: Don't respond to their emails, open a claim to get your final fee back, if they ebay message asking for shipping costs say I will check with my post office and get back to you in the next few days. and then as soon as you see the eligible for a final value fee option click this, get your fees back, they will get an unpaid item strike boom. Make sure you don't respond to any of their messages, if they leave neg feedback it will be removed as they would of had an unpaid item strike. I have to do this to 3 or 4 buyers a month, even though it's in the listing, some people are blind:D

You don't know what the item is or how much it weighs. Eu postage with ISF can be expensive and is restricted to under 2kg in weight.

    This is terrible advice.

OP you need to read the postage sticky and then adjust your preferences if you don't wish to ship outside the UK.

I would suggest you find the cost of postage and either accept to sell to Hungary on this occasion or explain to the buyer you only ship to the UK and hope they will accept a cancellation.

Are they asking for the cost of postage to Hungary or to the Uk?

Might seem a silly question but I've sold to buyers in Dubai who had a uk address to have items posted to and it worked out just fine.
  • The buyer wanted to post to Hungary.

I`ve emailed the buyer back saying Im sorry i post to uk only.
Had a msg back saying OK can you cancel my win - so all done easy peasy phew!

I dont bother claiming back fvf credits on small amounts and i dont want buyer to get strike so i will just leave it.

DA63417's post is complete fiction anyway. Apart from "some people are blind" - kind of him to point that out.
Perhaps the response is, some people don't know how to sell on ebay.

The buyer does not get a strike if you cancel the transaction.

As the buyer as asked you to do it - why wouldn't you? Makes no sense.

Make sure you set your preferences to stop overseas buyers next time - or it will happen again and you may end up with a neg.
