Ah no, you misunderstand....the feeling uncomfortable in the spare room thing isn't because of physical comfort or discomfort, it's because I feel uneasy, as if I'm not alone.

Have you tried some of the snoring aids out there? They might not work, but it sounds as if both of you are at the end of your tether so it couldn't hurt. I found that when I had slight hayfever, the little adhesive strips that you can stick on your nose helped me. And my OH has been recovering from an operation, and he's been sleeping propped up in more or less in a sitting position, which had the bonus of stopping him snoring.
Good luck with it all - I know how difficult it can be, I'm a light sleeper but my OH is a very deep sleeper, so if I snore I wake myself up, and if he snores he wakes me up - either way it's me who wakes up! And I tried ear plugs and ended up going temporarily deaf in one ear with wax so that didn't help.0 -
OH tells me I may have this. He reckons I snore, then go quiet for ages before breathing again.
I think I snore, catch myself doing it, then lie really quiet for ages as I'm scared of waking him up, then I doze off again.
Two different 'takes' on the same thing.
I think you should both visit a gp and discuss this.
Aliasojo, I have been very seriously I'll this summer with my health problems, and sleep apnea came up as a possible influencing factor. Dh was able to confirm I did not have this pattern of snoring/breathing, mainly because he remembers it from his mother who did have it. (she died when he was a teen). This can be a very serious thing, and if you DO have sleep apnea it could be making you more tired and contributing to your 'weight issue'.
Please sweet thing, we all have been very worried about your funny self, now some of us will worryi more...lee a doctor, do a sleep study at home. I am going to do one to, so if you like we can compare notes. I have latrophobia and have been putting mine off, but I will make a deal to do it if you do it too....:D0 -

That will record any periods of apnoea. And, tbh, what he describes you as doing sounds a lot like it. Your airway is closing off, then you wake due to the lowering of oxygen - many times a night. In fact, it wouldn't be surprising if the spare room worries are partly due to your airway collapsing - if you aren't worrying about waking him, if the pillow isn't quite as supportive, if you're on your back rather than on your side because you have the whole bed to yourself, all of those could make the number of apnoeic episodes worse.
I use a CPAP machine as a result and it's a vast improvement.
Of course, he could also be exhibiting symptoms, so he needs to be checked out as well - but don't wait for him, just get off to the GP asap.

Did mine at home, too. First time, through local hospital was rubbish - involved a wrist gadget and nothing else (and showed nothing wrong). Hardly surprisingly, as it was designed for assessing emphysema patients for oxygen, not OSA.
The second time, through a proper sleep clinic, involved hooking myself up to a variable pressure thingummiwotsit, and showed repeated apnoeic episodes throughout the night.
Had a CPAP ever since and it's made a huge difference over time.
In one unexpected way too - I would get sleep paralysis, where you can't move, but you're terrified/can feel something is there with you, because I was waking due to apnoea before my body could follow suit. If I were in mid dream at the time, it was even worse. They stopped immediately I started CPAP therapy.

If it is me then that's no problem, it's not like I'm really trying to ignore the fact or anything. I just really wanted to ascertain the facts first and be certain it was actually me with the problem before deciding what best to do.Herman - MP for all!0 -

Well, IMO if it's sleep apnea it could be LESS hassle if it is identified.
There is a relation with increased weight, like snoring, and if it's that and they get you what you need for a good nights sleep you will have loads more energy and what seems like huge hassle will seem like minor barely noticables after a decent sleep!0
