If you had no idea when it ran out, I would say it worked out for you.
It would cost a damn sight more than what it has done so far if you were caught with none, which is what would have happened if the first you knew was when your bank statement arrived.
    Be happy...;)

What I fail to understand is that individuals with access to PC's etc to post on here, can't/don't use the electronic diary facility to set up a reminder one month before renewals are due and then complain!

Clearly reviewing renewals is not seen as a priority.

Of course the other alternative if you are not sure is to look at your current insurance certificate as the expiry date is on there, but maybe that is too difficult for some people.
  • I am now fighting with Swiftcover, we are sure we told them to cancel our renewal because they were over 100% more expensive than a quote we got online. We only noticed the amounts to Swiftcover this month on the bank statement and queried them (we have separate policy on DD with them as well) Phoned today and told them, they are now denying all knowledge of phone call to cancel and we can't prove we did phone. They then wanted me to pay £52.50 to cancel a policy I didn't need, want or ask for! Surely the MID is capable of informing the Insurance company that a car has been insured twice, when it can tell the relevant authorities that it is not insured.

Can you get an itemised phone bill for the run up to renewal?
  • I would recommend that as its such an important issue and implications of mistakes can be expensive it is best to only communicate with insurance companies in writing which includes email. If you do speak to them on the phone confirm your instruction by email as soon as possible. Make sure your spam filter does not reject their emails or you many miss the renewal reminder.
If you have one of those blue MOT reminder stickers stuck to the back of your tax disc write the insurance renewal date on it. You then have all the info in one place for quick reference.
