House insurance - relative living in house

Hi I have a house that I own but which I am not living in at present, a relative is staying there for a few months but they are not paying me any rent.

I want to ensure the building (not contents) but I am not sure what to look for as It not my current home and its not rented out.

Can anyone point me in the right direction.

First port of call would be a good insurance broker (not Swintons as they have a poor reputation on here).

Explain everything to the broker and they should be able to help you. You will need buildings insurance and if you have any contents in the property such as appliances etc. etc. you will need insurance for these.

It is not uncommon for individuals to own properties that are occupied by relatives that do not pay rent, and it is possible to get insurance cover at reasonable cost. Your relative will need to effect their own policy for their contents.

This is the type of risk which you cannot get a quote for on the aggregator sites, so as stated your best route is via a broker who will have access to several insurers.

Just remember to check the paperwork very carefully to ensure that the position as you describe is recorded as such to ensure there are no complications in the event of a claim.
