Cancelling my insurance

At the moment my husband and I both have cars and insurance. We are planning to downsize to one car – therefore need only one insurance.
My policy ends middle of January and his at the end.
I think it’s probably going to be easier for us to start a new insurance for the new car – is there anything to stop us just letting the 2 other policies run till they expire? It will only be for a couple of weeks on mine and about 4 weeks on the other.
Anybody had any experience in this area?
Many thanks.

You cannot use any existing no claims on a new policy until the old one expires or is cancelled.
And remember cancelling the direct debits does not cancel the policy.
If you still have insurance on a car that you have sold, You and your insurance could still be liable for any claims.
What if the buyer dont insure it? All tickets etc may come to you. You may need to explain why your insuring a car you claim not to own.
Just use them or cancel them. They will see if as dodgy having 2 people insuring the same car and both claiming to be the owner and keeper.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
as above, if the cars you are disposing of are going to continue being used on the roads then you really need to cancel/transfer your policies when you get rid of the old cars.
if you buy from a dealer you might get a weeks free insurance which will make juggling dates & policies0 -
If you no longer own the cars you should cancel or suspend the policies, because your insurer can be held liable if the new owner has an accident and isn't insured, in which case your insurer will them come after YOU, because it will be a condition of the policy that you inform them.
As stated, NCD can't be used on two policies at once.
So you need to cancel or suspend at least one of the policies. They may allow you to transfer any unused period to a new car policy to start at a later date, but it probably isn't worth it for a few weeks, given the fees which they will charge to change. We need the earth for food, water, and shelter.
