Hundreds of dogs and cats die from rock salt scattered by gritters in big freeze Rea

Comments

  • Ohhhh it's sooooo horrible GR ...... dogs, well at least we can wash their feet when they come in but if the cats have been out you've no way of knowing if they've maybe licked something.

This is so sad, and worrying.

I guess it is on an increase too because rock salt and anti-freeze are so easy to get hold of now. All supermarkets now sell it.

I towel Tyson's paws off when he comes in, do you think washing them as well would help?

I am worrying because he is constantly licking due to his skin condition.

Any tips for washing the paws of a complete wriggle monster who sees the towel as a signal for a full on wrestling game?! The minute the towel comes out, he starts his play barking and ragging the towel round. He then makes it his mission to get as much mud on me as possible, with bonus points if the towel makes it out completely clean and dry!

I have made a 'dog-wash' out of towels to clean most of him, and paws are usually done by just running round like a loon on a load of towels.

That's awful. Luckily I live in a very rural area that doesn't get gritted at all so my cat will be okay. I suppose you should be careful about the bottoms of your shoes walking salt into the house though.

Gosh I have known about anti freeze for years but had never considered rock salt to be a risk , and had even nearly bought some last week when I saw it in Lidl to put down on my path.
