Can someone tell me if its true that it nows costs to use the 1471 service to check who last called you?
My elderly Aunt says she is charged if she dials 1471 and NOT when she dials 1571.
I said I thought that was wrong but she is adamant so thought I'd check see if anyone knows for sure please?

It may depend on who your aunt is with, but I think that 1471 is still free, but if you press 3 to return the call there is a charge for that.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0

She is with BT! Am I not also right that there is a premium for pressing '5' to return the call of someone who has called you?

I use 1471 quite often to check who has called as I get so many junk calls I don't ever answer!! I certainly haven't been charged for the service.0

1471 is free. But if you then use the Call Return feature (3) to dial the last number, it's 17.7p per call-so don't! Just dial the number yourself.
From the BT website (my italics):
* Dialling BT 1471 without using Call Return is free. The Call Return feature of BT 1471 costs a fixed fee of 17.7p. The fee will apply when you press 3 to return your last caller's call. This charge applies whether or not the call is connected. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -

However as owain states if you return the call by keying '3' (not 5) then a charge is made I think on top of the call charges.
Is that what your aunt is doing?0 -
The whole purpose of 1471 being free is to encourage you to use it, and then pay a fortune should you be foolish enough to press '3' as well.No free lunch, and no free laptop0

And the purpose of 1571 is to get a call revenue when the call is answered by the voicemail and another call revenue when you phone the caller back.A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.0

Why Owain? does 1571 cost with BT?0 -
Yes - it costs the caller, not the recipient. The reasoning is with VM, the call can be flagged as completed (and therefore charged on the caller's bill). Without VM, the call is unanswered, and if the caller just hears ringing out - no charge is made.0

does 1571 cost with BT?Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0
